The mid-sized companies are the backbone of the German economy and employ more than 30 million employees. The dominant form of companies in this segment are family businesses, which are inherently different from other firms in many regards. One of the main and recurring challenges that family-run and -owned businesses face, is the necessity for succession management. Currently, the German industry is faced with approx. 10% of all family-owned companies where the head of the firm and the family is 77 years old or older. Thus, it is only a matter of time until a major upheaval will affect German executive boards of family-owned companies. It is a disruption that needs to be managed and monitored in order to keep its impact on the productivity at a minimum. Until 2022, there will be 511.000 mid-sized companies looking for a suitable successor. But despite intensive search, only 52% of the companies have found the right match at this point in time.
