The stand-off between Russia and Ukraine over Crimea has been described as the biggest crisis in Europe in the 21st century, a threat to peace and security and very volatile. Russian forces have seized control of Crimea, which has an ethnic Russian majority, and Ukraine has put its forces on combat alert.

Ukraine’s military is considerably outgunned by Russia’s according to International Institute for Strategic Studies data. In addition, Ukraine’s military has suffered from underfunding and it relies on mainly Soviet-era equipment that increasingly needs replacement.
