Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder (TMD) is a condition that occurs as a result of dysfunction in the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement. In other words, a misaligned or bad bite, what dentists call “malocclusion.” To temporarily alleviate TMD symptoms, sufferers can try conservative self-care practices at home before consulting a TMD dentist who can determine if the underlying problem causing the pain and discomfort can be eliminated.
